Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Deewaar.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Deewaar.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 20:43, 13 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi

Hi Grenavitar, just spoted your message. No, in not around anymore. I did learn lots while editing here, but after a while it felt that the productivity of the time i spent here eroded, while the reistance i met from Sunni and maintream editors was constant, thus, it eventualy became not worth the effort. For now, i have been working on a wiki of my own, and have spent one year laing it's groundwork and infrastructure. I hope to launch it soon. I trust you are all well to? --Striver - talk 22:11, 13 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Dil_Se_DVD_cover.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Dil_Se_DVD_cover.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 20:15, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Brew-ha-ha on Muhammad

There's been a lot of discussion of image issues on enwiki-l (the mailing list for english Wikipedia) and I mentioned it to Itaqallah as someone who's been a reasonable voice is a sea of (something else) as the discussion there has the advantage of being composed of people who's first goal is the encyclopaedia, but the disadvantage of few of them being familiar with the situation. Itaqallah recommended I drop you a note to the same effect, so here it is. Doesn't require your attention if you're uninterested, but might be a source of productive editors in the area. Smallville

I beg to differ. The author has a PhD in English, has published academic books and scholarly articles on fiction and television, with specialties in gay culture. See his bio. The publishing agent of that article might not be the most professional, but the author at least has a history of publishing on television (with at least two books on other television series.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 02:44, 23 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, it's partially my fault because unlike on the main page, I forgot to link to his credentials as well. So, all you saw was his name and nothing else. As for using it as a source. When researching sources, I couldn't find really any thematical elements on just the first season, or on any single season of the show. When people talk they usually do it in reference to the series as a whole. That's why I felt listing it as an external link wsa the most appropriate since I couldn't write an entire section based on a single person's perspective (not even if they were the foremost authority on the subject), but it was still interesting reading on the first and second seasons, so I felt that was the best place for it.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 03:37, 23 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

First Convention of the Industrial Workers of the World

You had typed:

...you cited the Brissenden book The I.W.W. which... I know there was a printing of the second edition in 1920 which I have seen but your date was 1919 so... could you add publisher information (city, publisher, edition info, etc.) on either the page or my userpage

This article was split off from Industrial Workers of the World when that article became too mired in detail. I think that all of the Brissenden material was added before the separation. I don't recall having that source, so i'm afraid that i won't be able to assist. This maybe the edit you want:

Image source problem with Image:MxPx - Life in General.jpg

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:MxPx - Life in General.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:19, 28 February 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Geniac (talk) 17:19, 28 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Gren

Hello Gren!

How are you? Long time... (if you remember me)

I think you are a great editor. Yeh Manisha is indeed the best actress of the 90s. I was amazed everytime with her powerful performances. She is so underrated today. Khamoshi, for example, is a great example of superb acting. She had to win a national film award for this film, but lost, due to a delay in submission of entries by the producers. Also I liked her in Dil Se, Bombay, Agnisakshi, and even B-grade movies like Escape from Taliban and Market among others (in fact, all her films!! :-} ). She has recently starred in Tulsi, which released last month. I'll see it ASAP. I have expanded her article, but it's difficult to make a GA, because her career was mainly notable in the 90s, and there is a very little number of net sources covering her career then. What do you think about the article?

Though I was not a fan of Karisma in the 90s, cause I don't really appreciate these David Dhavan commedies (though great entertainment, except for Swarg, there is nothing special about his films in terms of acting). Fiza was a complete turning point in Karisma's career. You must watch this film! I was shocked with her super natural portrayal. The scene which had her crying for her mother after the latter had committed suicide is in my opinion one of the most powerful scenes in the history of Hindi cinema.

As for Preity, I'm a big fan. She is my favourite actress of today's generation. I think she is amazing. She has excited me with every performance. Well, I've seen all her films. Have you? I'm happy she took on off beat cinema this year. She made a film with non other than Deepa Mehta, Rituparno Ghosh and also Assamese director Jahnu Barua. I took the article to GA, and I'm planning to take it to a second FAC soon.

Thanks for the message friend. My best regards, ShahidTalk2me 22:36, 18 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Systematic bias in Wikipedia - A solution

Hi Gren,

Could you please take a look at my latest proposal here. I would appreciate your input on that. Thanks --Be happy!! (talk) 09:09, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your comment Gren.
"Articles like "What Do We Know About Muhammad?" show a baseline of things that we can say we know... it doesn't mean other things aren't true but it differentiates between types of truth values and what is strongest. I think that's important. But, without all of us becoming good academics I'm not sure how to resolve that."
The basic assumption here is that what we could possibly know of Muhammad could be expressed in an objective, third person perspective. That's pretty much the spirit of most scientific works; they remove the role of the audience in the topic. The way Muslims, Buddhists and in fact "non-philosophers" have looked at human understanding is that real knowledge and real truth is not something that can be fully written on paper. Reaching a state of purity or enlightenment is required for that. One needs to personally involve himself with the topic he is studying. That's why I think there are so many theories. What people need to do is to try to somehow bring their theories into real life and put them into practice. If I want to learn about a religous topic, I need to learn something about it, then do something from what I have learned, then learn something more, ... and back and forth. In Wikipedia therefore when we write about Christianity, I think, we should tell something about God's love in a section, then finish it with some concrete things one can do to understand it better, like say "forgiving others". This way, one can learn how Christians deduce the life style from the concept of "God's love". For Islam, the central issue is "Tawhid"(unity of God) and not love; a bit more difficult to deduce the whole Islam from it...
My whole point is that Wikipedia articles should start interacting with their audience in a practical way.--Be happy!! (talk) 01:15, 23 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

That's fine. I used bullets for a reason though (found through prior experience with these multiple comments), namely that if someone puts a reply 'mid-numbering' it mucks up the numbers, and they reset to 1 after the reply (also why I used :* rather than ** for the bullets). --jjron (talk) 07:56, 27 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Leftist-Islamist Alliance or Marx-Muhammad pact, Wikiquote

"This isn't the place to discuss it, but could Wikiquote use articles on Leftist-Islamist Alliance or Marx-Muhammad pact"

I don't know and I wouldn't create the pages if I were me (and I am) but if the term is specifically used by the authors then it could work and not run into the same problems as we do here with secondary sources--because, you don't need them. I am not exactly sure how Wikiquote judges if pages should be kept or not but it seems reasonable--especially if the pages are deleted here. gren グレン 05:56, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Someone described these terms as nonce phrases, which I think would fall outside the scope of Wikiquote. However, if either of these topics were taken seriously somewhere, they might be valid entries, and the names of writers using this language could have some informative value. That said, I'm not interested in creating these articles myself. / edg 06:23, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.

I think rollbacking is perfectly fine for this. Not because we don't like the template but because there has been done so many errors and it is impossible to go over them all. I'll start with the oldest contributions and hope you'll take the newest. Rettetast (talk) 22:19, 22 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

No worries on the BC/BCE thing, out of curiosity though, why do you support BCE? We were talking about wikipedia one time and I mentioned that I kept coming across the same login name saved on the computers in the library and you said it was yours. Then I realized I could use some rollback action and I saw your name on the edit history of some article. How is summer treating you? Deletion of my image

Hello. I don't know why you deleted my image Map of Austria's seats showing the map of Austria's seats? What's the reason for? Thank you. Häsk (talk) 22:56, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

My image was on this article: Distribution of seats in the Austrian Landtage the whole time until you've made your edit and after your edit the image was removed:
"23:43, 12 January 2008 Grenavitar (Talk | contribs) (5,373 bytes) (change to an image map)".
Häsk (talk) 13:12, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Now I understand you. But on my screen there is no map or an image. There's just a white, vacant space without any content. And so there is also no "big white 'i' in a blue circle". Maybe my PC isn't able to display it properly.Häsk (talk) 14:26, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sino-Bhutanese relations DYK

Hi Grenavitar - over your point of using {{cite web}}, I have not heard/seen this as a requirement for DYK. Every day there are numerous DYKs that go up without this template, but are properly citing the hook and all. Naturally I can and will address your concern, but I don't as such understand why its a problem per se. Vishnava talk 16:09, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for helping out on this. While obviously it is not a requirement for DYK (which means I'm not gonna scramble to change all my noms) I will take care to use citation templates in my future articles, as I have done with Pakistan-Turkey relations today. I appreciate your advice, Regards, Vishnava talk 04:16, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

J'espère que tu apprécies ton séjour à Bordeaux, c'est une superbe ville. J'y ai vécu pendant 5 ans mais maintenant je suis à Pittsburgh, en Pennsylvanie et c'est ... différent.

WP:Articles for deletion/Most Great Name

Since I started that AFD, and my edits to the article were taken exception to, I do hope your comments aren't directed at me. You're a seasoned editor whose observations are generally spot on, and if I'm spot off, I'd like to know. MARussellPESE (talk) 21:26, 18 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Gren. I have been accused of being a sockpuppet for this entry. Whilst this has my first edit on a page, that I have come out in support of a position that there appears to be a good deal of controversy over appears to have landed me with this accusation. As a minor editor, I don't really know how to address this, and the person responsible for citing me (user MARusselPESE) seems quite intent on erasing all argument and entries on this discussion. I have looked at the comments left on the AFD page, the histories of the other editors cited for sockpuppetry, and looked through the affiliation of certain editors/voters for deletion or inclusion. There is another article on Wikipedia entitled the Greatest Name (another title for the Most Great Name), that is a Bahai symbol. The editor who originally cited this article for deletion is affiliated with this organisation, and there appears to be historical disagreement regarding the origins of the symbol. As you quite rightly said, the case for inclusion should be made on the basis of the strength of the article, but if there there still may be a bias/conflict of interest going on here between the perspective of the editor and the material he is choosing to cite for deletion. As an editor who appears to have a good history with Islamic and Arabic related subjects, please could you keep an eye on these issues, and perhaps be aware that if there is some sort of agenda playing out between religious groups, that it be taken notice of. This is an area that need more research, not deletion. I'm not sure what happens if I'm blocked or if there's recourse to it, but hope these issues can be addressed if I am.58.173.219.59 (talk) 00:21, 20 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:LBM2.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

I believe The Sheltering Sky (film) was on your "want" list. I'll still try to add a bit, but take a look -- I've given the article, links, references a major upgrade in the past week. W0129 (talk) 03:44, 25 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

No problem -- I'm a big fan of the book, and expanding the article inspired me to see the movie. I think the "Plot" section needs some tuning and I might write a "Differences between novel/film" section. Take care. W0129 (talk) 04:11, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

1981 warning strike in Poland

Thanks for the kind words, yes, this strike was really big, and now it is overlooked. Surprisingly enough, Polish Wikipedia does not have an article which describes it. Greetings. Tymek (talk) 01:57, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I hope you saw my message to you on your WikiCommons talkpage page. Please type in a flickr pass for the hijab image. If not, someone else would surely target it next sadly. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:51, 11 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

WikiCommons

I'm sorry to disturb you here but please try to type in a Flickr pass for this photo at your WikiCommons account. I see it is heavily used: [7]

Someone has ordered all the images in the 'possibly unfree category' to be reviewed again and so it may/may not get deleted in the near future. Thank you, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:42, 24 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
